Hiring a Videographer

Consider and scrutinize professional videographers the same way you would a photographer. Be sure to ask to see samples of past work and check references. Confirm that your videographer has up-to-date, quality equipment.

Make sure that the videographer has the ability to...

  • edit the tape to highlight important sequences
  • isolate key moments identified before hand
  • work within established positioning and lighting

Ask to view sample tapes. You're looking for smooth editing, clear sound, and an overall professional feel to the tape. With all of the technology today, you don't have to settle for anything short of broadcast quality production values.

Also don't forget to check out our helpful list of interview questions to ask when meeting with videographers!

When viewing sample tapes, consider the following...

  • Do the segments tell a story, giving a clear sense of the order in which the events took place?
  • Does the tape capture the most important moments—such as exchanging vows or cutting the cake?
  • Is there steady use of the camera, clear sound, vibrant color, and a nice sharp picture?
  • How are the shots framed? What editing techniques are used?
  • Does the tape move smoothly from one scene to the next—rather than lurching ahead unexpectedly?

If the videographer has never worked at you ceremony or reception locations, arrange a time for them to meet you at the site to identify any obstacles or other issues before the wedding day. Also arrange a time for the videographer to come and set up their equipment prior to the wedding, if necessary. Attending the rehearsal is also a great idea. Then the videographer will know exactly where everyone will be located and what camera angles are best.
