Announcements

Do we need to send wedding announcements?
Absolutely not, wedding announcements are a completely optional tradition (and expense)! They are commonly used by those who elope or have a very small wedding. Announcements are also useful if you want to let professional colleagues know you’re now married and will be changing your name.

Who should receive wedding announcements?
Wedding announcements can be sent to family, friends and colleagues who where not invited to the wedding. Remember all of those people that had to be cut from your guest list for one reason or another? This is how you can notify them of your recent nuptials. Keep in mind however, that the people receiving announcements are under no obligation to buy you a gift!

Who should NOT receive wedding announcements?
This one is simple! Anyone who received a wedding invitation should not receive an announcement, even if they were unable to attend the wedding.

When should the wedding announcements be mailed?
Wedding announcements should be mailed as soon as possible after the wedding…preferably the very next day. This means that you should have them ready well in advance. It’s a good idea to select a responsible person and ask them to mail the announcements for you. The mothers of the bride/groom, the maid of honor or the best man are usually all good choices. The last thing you want is to stop at the post office on the way to the airport!

How should the announcements be worded?
Announcements are typically worded like the wedding invitation, only the wedding has obviously already happened! Many brides choose to have the announcements match the invitations in everyway including style, font, and paper. Try to keep the same level of formality of your wedding invitations, even if you choose a different style!

Whoever hosted/sponsored the wedding should get the honor of announcing it…

If your parents announce:

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kramer
have the honor to announce
the marriage of their daughter
Melissa Ann
to
Michael James Clark
Saturday, the fifth of May
two thousand and three
United Methodist Church
Kalamazoo, Michigan

OR

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kramer
proudly announce
the marriage of their daughter
Melissa Ann
to
Michael James Clark
Saturday, the fifth of May
two thousand and three
United Methodist Church
Kalamazoo, Michigan

If you and your fiancé announce your own wedding:

Melissa Ann Kramer
and
Michael James Clark
