Registry: China & Casual Dinnerware
By Megan Mercer
Last Update:
November 5, 2004

Some of the various types of dinnerware you might register for are as follows:

Dinnerware

  • Dinner Plates
  • Sandwich/Lunch Plates
  • Salad/Dessert Plates
  • Bread and Butter Plates
  • Cups and Saucers
  • Rimmed Soup Bowls
  • Soup/Cereal Bowls
  • Fruit Bowls
  • Open Vegetable Dishes
  • Covered Vegetable Dishes
  • Gravy Boat
  • Sugar Bowl
  • Creamer
  • Small Platter
  • Medium Platter
  • Large Platter
  • Salt and Pepper Shakers
  • Coffeepot
  • Teapot
  • Butter Dish

Consider registering for both a formal china pattern for special occasions and a less expensive, casual pattern for every day use.  Try to choose classic styles and colors that won't look terribly out-dated and you won't tire of over the years!

"Everydayware"
There are several kinds of everydayware to choose from.  Stoneware and Earthenware are two very popular choices. Keep in mind that Stoneware is generally more durable than Earthenware and may hold up longer.

Place settings typically come in 4-piece sets including a dinner plate, salad/dessert plate, soup/cereal bowl, and mug.  We recommend registering for at least 8 place settings, however think of you and your fiancé’s lifestyle and the size of your family to determine what is right for you.

China
There are two types of fine china: porcelain and bone. Porcelain is made from refined clay and minerals that make it nonporous (cannot be stained by food).  The main ingredient in bone china is bone ash. Bone china is considered the best and highest quality china.  It has an almost translucent glow; if you hold it up to light, you can see through it.

Fine china place settings typically come in 5-piece sets including a dinner plate, salad/dessert plate, bread plate, and a cup and saucer. Bridal experts recommend getting 8 to 12 place settings.
