The best man is usually the groom’s brother, cousin, best friend or sometimes his father. Overall the best man serves as the groom’s personal aide, advisor and confidant before and during the wedding. He should also watch over the other groomsmen and make sure that they are performing their assigned duties.

Here is a list of all of the official duties and responsibilities of the best man…

Organize the bachelor party with the help of the other groomsmen
Pay for his own wedding attire
Drive the groom to the ceremony—ON TIME!!
Hold the bride’s ring during the ceremony
Sign the marriage license as a witness, along with the maid of honor, after the ceremony
Give payment to the officiant either just before or just after the ceremony (the money is customarily provided by the groom and his family)
Decorate the getaway mobile
Give payment to other service providers, such as chauffeurs and reception coordinators (if the families wish him to)

Dance with the maid of honor during the formal first-dance sequence
Return the groom’s rented wedding attire (the next business day after the wedding)
Make sure that the wedding gifts make it safely to the bride and groom’s home
